For the past few years Google has been scanning literature that is now out of copyright protection (pre 1923). So they now have a library of 500,000 classics (fiction and non fiction) that can be accessed for free if your ebook reader supports the open platform ePub. However, the main ebook readers only support licenced formats, restricting the ebook formats that you can read.

Sony, having seen the power of the open source movement in action in the internet server market with Linux versus Microsoft, included the open platform ePub on their ebook reader. This means that Sony’s Reader has access to more 500,000 free ebooks, far more than any of the other rival ebook readers.

So now you can access works from Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Francis Bacon and loads loads more. This library of free books makes the Sony Reader very compelling.

Don’ know what an eBook is? Take a quick look at our brief guide to eBooks

IMPORTANT: Before buying an eBook reader you must determine what books you wish to read and what format they are available in. Remember the VHS vs. Betamax video tape war or the more recent HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray DVD battle? Well the same is happening with eBooks and the format that they are published in.

Why? If manufacturers can get critical mass and own a propritery format then they will make better profits for many years to come than they would if they pursued an open source format. One factor to really consider when choosing an eBook reader is its ability to read many different formats. Otherwise you may not be able to buy a book that you wish to read as it is not available in the format that your eBook reader understands.

The main eBook readers that are available in the market today include:

iLiad

Sony Reader

Kindle eBook reader (the mobile wireless connectivity does not work in the UK)
